The unincorporated community of Buxton rests on Hatteras Island in popular Outer Banks area of North Carolina. The community is part of Dare County, and lies along North Carolina Highway 12. The community, like many others in the area, is governed by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. The children of the community attend school at Cape Hatteras Elementary, Secondary School and High School, home of the Hurricanes, which is located conveniently right in Buxton. Buxton is home to the well-known Cape Hatteras Lighthouse which is America's tallest brick construction lighthouse standing 208 feet tall. Approximately 3000 shipwrecks lie along the coast of the Outer Banks. Buxton Woods is a sprawling maritime forest that covers much of the island beautiful flora and fauna call the forest home.
Buxtons economy rests largely on the tourism trade and during the tourist season the area population skyrockets.
