NC Kitty Hawk

The town of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina is located in Dare County and is part of the popular vacation destination area known as the Outer Banks. The community was established in the early 1800s and was known first as Chickahawk most likely after the Native American word for "a time or place to hunt geese". Kitty Hawk's sister city is Coulaines, France which lies less than two miles north of Le Mans. The city motto appropriately enough is "First in Flight" as Kitty Hawk was the nearest settlement, at the time, to the location of the famous first flight of the Wright brothers.

According to the 2010 United States Census, Kitty Hawk was home to approximately 2,991. The town spans 8.23 miles, this combined with their population gives them a population density of 365.8 people per square mile. The town is part of North Carolina's 3rd congressional district and is represented by Walt Jones. Like the rest of the communities in the Outer Banks area of North Carolina Kitty Hawk's economy is primarily based in tourism. The median household income is approximately $42,813. Men tend to make a little more per year than women and the median family income is $48,676.

The town consists of a beach community predominantly made up of residential cottages perfect for summer rentals, the traditional village where most of the long time residents of the town dwell, and a maritime forest reserve that spans 461 acres. Like most other towns along the Outer Bank, Kitty Hawk's population swells with the arrival of tourists in the spring. But, despite the booming tourism trade the residents of the community strive to keep the development of the town in harmony with the surrounding nature. Homes for sale in the town are mostly single family residences of the middle class variety. Other real estate options include cottages and apartments for rent.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy and are encouraged to indulge in an active outdoor lifestyle due to the towns mild climate and proximity to the beach. Things to do in Kitty Hawk include, the Monument to a Century of Flight, Ravenchase Adventures, Sea Scape Golf Links, Kitty Hawk Skate and Dog Park and so much more. At Kitty Hawk you can explore the maritime forest, walk the beaches or just enjoy some fine dining. Whether you are looking for the perfect summer house or a place to truly call home, local real estate agents await to find the perfect property.
