The town of Kill Devil Hills is located in Dare, North Carolina and is part of the well-known tourist destination known as the Outer Banks. The area is the real site of the Wright Brothers famous first flight, though Kitty Hawk has always held the honor because it was the nearest community at the time of the flight.
The town's name arose in the Colonial era. Shipwrecks were a very real and frequent occurrence and salvaging from those wrecks meat good money to local settlers. Many of the plundered ships were hauling rum which was called Kill Devil. With so many stashes of rum being hidden among the dunes the dunes began to resemble hills and hence the name Kill Devil Hills developed. The Wright brothers made four flights on December 17, 1903 and their place in history was assured, it would be 8 years later when Orville would return to make another record making flight when he sat a gliding record of 10 minutes and 34 seconds. The accomplishments of the Wright brothers are commemorated by the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Another bit of homage to the accomplishments of the brothers are the First Flight Airport, Flight Elementary School and First Flight Middle School which stand near neighbors to the monument.
